Nafeesa, former student of George Salter Academy, now works as an associate within corporate finance at Deloitte.
Nafeesa attended George Salter Academy sixth form and studied A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Geography. She was unsure of her career pathway, so she chose her degree, which was a BSc in Global Health and Social Medicine at Kings College in London, because of the interests that she had at the time. To help her decide what to do, Nafeesa attended lots of networking events and reached out to people on LinkedIn for advice and guidance about their careers. This helped her narrow down her options and she made the decision to specialise in a career in finance.
In her first year of University, Nafeesa also went to the University of Hong Kong to study the luxury markets in East Asia. This was a very enriching experience and inspired her to undertake two further internships during her undergraduate degree, including deal advisory at KPMG and wealth management at Schroder’s. All of these experiences combined, gave her the knowledge to apply for the role that she has now, which is working in advisory corporate finance, specifically business modelling and analytics with Deloitte. Nafeesa is also working towards a SIMA qualification.
Nafeesa’s advice for other OAT students:
- Imposter Syndrome is a real thing; it is easy to think that you aren’t good enough, or that you are aiming too high. But these thoughts are just hypotheticals and the best thing to do is ignore them.
- Pursue your dreams to the full… if it doesn’t work out, it just means that something better is waiting for you.
- Ask lots of questions and be curious… take advantage of any mentoring schemes, networking events and careers teams at your disposal. The more information you have, the better it is for you.
