George, former student of Packmoor Ormiston Academy and Ormiston Horizon Academy, works for Bentley Motors in the driver assistance department.
George’s journey to Bentley began in his penultimate year at Ormiston Horizon Academy when he completed a week’s work experience in the chassis vehicle dynamics department. His work experience opened his eyes to what a career in the automotive industry could be like. He knew from this point that he wanted to work for Bentley, so he contacted his local sixth form college about the possibility of studying four A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Computer Science, whilst also having one day a week designated on his timetable to work experience. He spent this day working with the engineers in vehicle dynamics at Bentley.
George enjoyed his time at Bentley so much that he decided to apply for a degree apprenticeship. There was an opportunity available in an area that it going to be huge in the next decade; Driver Assistance Systems (DAS). George’s work in the DAS team involves the development functions such as radar-based cruise control, and line-keep assist, functions that are paving the way to autonomous driving. George mixes work experience with study at the University of Warwick and will achieve a degree in engineering.
George thinks it was evitable that he would work with cars! His advice to other OAT students is:
- Always think about how you are going to set yourself apart from the competition. Whilst you can differentiate yourself by achieving top grades, it is even more important to focus on what you are doing outside of school.
- George’s work experience and his time in Scouts were huge factors in securing his job. Find yourself some relevant work experience and join a club like the Scouts, find an interesting hobby, learn a foreign language, or even a programming language… anything that makes your CV stand out in a pile of other applicants!
