After leaving OSCA, Imraj studied Biology, Chemistry and Maths at A-level, alongside completing an EPQ in robotic surgery. Imraj achieved high grades and wanted to take a gap year to gain additional experience which will support him with his application to study medicine at university next year. He will be working as a Health Care Assistant in his local hospital and is excited about working within the multi-disciplinary team which strives to provide the best possible patient centered care, whilst also learning about the practical and everyday challenges that come with working in a busy ward environment.
Imraj’s initial interest in medicine was sparked when studying GCSE Biology at OSCA, learning about the sheer complexities and intricacies of the human body is something that he found fascinating. Undertaking a wide variety of work experience placements has given him a deeper insight into what a career in medicine encapsulates but has also defined his ambition to enter such an advancing field.
During his journey Imraj has had to overcome a variety of challenges that have come his way. For example, whilst studying 3 A-levels and an EPQ, he could feel overwhelmed and burnt out. He addressed this by taking necessary breaks to prioritise his mental wellbeing and ensuring a healthy lifestyle through playing sports like cricket, as it helps with stress and keeping a positive growth mindset. Imraj believes that having a good work-life balance is vital as a student.
Imraj’s advice to other OAT students that want to pursue a similar pathway:
- Start early – try to gain as much voluntary work experience as possible, alongside engaging in a number of different extra-curricular activities which will boost your application to study medicine in the future.
