Information Technology (IT) Project Manager
Bobby Lal is an Information Technology (IT) Project Manager at The Drax Group. The Drax Group operates Drax power station in Goole, Yorkshire, the largest renewable power station in the UK.
Summary
- Drax power station now provides energy to homes through the biomass role out, using wood pellets rather than coal mining. Drax’s vision is to become carbon negative by 2030 and provide the homes with the energy they require, and that everyone benefits from it from an environmental, and energy point of view.
- Drax has computer systems, and we can calculate how much biomass or fuel we have burnt, this provides figures that we can give to the Government, as well as for our own financial records.
- I enjoy starting a new project, seeing the contributions from my team to ensure success at the end.
Sectors
My role is a project manager in IT at The Drax Group. My role is central to the successful delivery of a project. I keep track of costs, and multi department co-ordination, driving the project to ensure the project is delivered to plan, on time and on budget.
As a project manager you deal with finances a lot, own resource costs, software and hardware costs, and third-party costs. A project consists of three main things: time, quality, and costs.
I use a budget tracker within my role, to capture all costs of the project, to make sure I am within budget.
I also use WD8 (Working Day 8) file. This file collates all the costs for the month for the entire project and then I cross reference that with the budget tracker to make sure there are no discrepancies.
I also make use of a weekly timesheet report. I go through this weekly to make sure that the resource allocated to the project are charging me correctly. This then ties in with the WD8 File and budget tracker.
