A Marina Manager manages a marina; this is a specially designed harbour with moorings for yachts and pleasure craft.  A marina is different to a port because it does not handle larger passenger ships or cargo.

The Marina Manager is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of their marina.  This includes charging customers to keep their boats in the marine on an annual basis or visiting boats on a daily basis.  Other responsibilities could also include financial performance, berth utilisation and boatyard operation and marina and dry stack occupancy and the maintenance of onsite facilities, plant, and equipment.

A Marina Manager must be able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people.  The ability to be able to deal with members of the public and customers from all walks of life is key to this role.  Customers will need high standards of care, and this role will involve weekend working.

Another key aspect of the role of a Marina Manager will be manage the marina team well and be responsible for their health and safety and their working rotas.  It is important to have experience in H&S and to be able to demonstrate compliance with relevant laws and regulations.  Experience of motivating and empowering teams to deliver high quality customer service is also vital.

There are no specific qualifications needed for this role; many Marina Managers have a university degree but interest in the leisure and marine industry is also useful.  There are a number of qualifications through organisations such as British Marine (see below):

Working conditions are varied; there is a little bit of lone working, but mostly work is completed as a team.  The marina team work 8 hour shifts any time between 8am and 8pm, including one weekend in every three.
