Simran was inspired to study Sociology at degree level by her A-level Sociology teacher. Also, Sociology is a very broad subject that makes you question your own beliefs and thoughts, and this is what inspired her!
Simran was always very academic at school, and this is why she wanted to go to university; she felt that if she didn’t study at degree level that a lot of her academic talent would go to waste! Whilst at NEWA Simran was inspired during an employment week which was organised by Mrs Flanagan, the academy careers lead; she inspired a local employer who organised for her to have a week of work experience in construction and energy. At the end of the week, she was offered a degree apprenticeship, but she turned this opportunity down as she wanted to choose her own course and study at a university of her own choice. Simran chose the University of Birmingham because they have a really good sociology department, and they are a Russell Group University which was a key factor in her choice.
Simran’s advice for other OAT students:
- Talk to your teachers; there are so many opportunities at school that you don’t realise they are there! You won’t know about them unless you talk to you teachers and find out more!
