Sectors

The role of an agronomist is a very rewarding and fulfilling job, but it requires dedication and hard work to be successful.

Working in the countryside rather than an office is a dream for Ed, but it is not for everyone.

An agronomist is a farming consultant, advising farmers on all aspects of crop production, including soil management, seed, fertiliser and crop protection products.

Ed’s main responsibilities are:

  • Crop walking, checking crops for nutrition, pests, weeds and diseases that might need treating.
  • Client meetings, planning farm operations and cropping decisions
  • Organizing logistics for seed and sprays to be where they are needed.

For the role of an agronomist you need a pass grade in English and Mathematics GCSE, but no further education (FE) is required.

Ed did have prior experience as he worked on a farm during his university holidays. Some form of experience in agriculture is very helpful for this job.

The job is not 9am to 5pm, during busy times of the year it involves long days and weekends, but does allow flexibility during the working day, and there are quieter times in the year as well.

If you have a passion for food production and farming, every day is satisfying as oyu are working with like-minded people and working towards a common goal.
