Sectors

Beth’s working environment varies depending on if she is working in the office or remote working at home. In the office Beth has an immediate team of four people, in the communications department of around 30 people. In the office Beth needs to dress smartly, but it is more relaxed when working at home. Beth enjoys the balance of working in the office and remotely. At home, two days a week, she can focus on writing which she prefers to do in silence. The office days are good for discussing ideas and building positive working relationships with her colleagues.

Beth has a laptop and PC monitor so works across both screens. Beth communicates with her team using Teams messenger and Teams video calls. There is a daily communications department meeting each morning at 10am, where each team discusses what they are working on that day.

At home Beth works 9-5pm. In the office working 8.30-4.30pm. As a journalist you are often expected to work outside of these hours to cover events or meetings. This additional time Beth can take as time in-lieu.

For anyone interested in a job in journalism, do not be scared to push yourself, ask for work experience on a local newspaper.

Beth highly recommends working in the agricultural sector. Beth is not from a farming background. Her previous job was in fashion.  Everyone in the industry has been welcoming, and it is a fascinating sector to work in, and write about. No one day or story is the same. That is the beauty of journalism, it is a transferable skill that can take you into any industry.
