The purpose of the apprentice boatbuilder role is to develop skills in all areas of boatbuilding including vessel construction, electrical fit-out, engineering, servicing and repair.   This is an entry level role that does not require prior boatbuilding experience, however a proven interest in engineering or model making is essential. 

The role of the apprentice boat builder is varied and interesting and offers many opportunities for your future once qualified.  To be successful in this role, you must be able to quickly get to grips with practical tasks such as accurate measuring and marking and using tools appropriately.    You must have a flexible attitude and a wiliness to work hard to develop your skills and you must enjoy working as part of a team.  

As this is a trainee role you do not need college level qualifications, however the recruitment process can be competitive so at least five passes at GCSE will be an advantage.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE EMPLOYER

Island RIBs Limited Island RIBs design and manufacture rigid inflatable boats from 6.8 to 10.0m in length.  All laminating, engineering and boat assembly is carried out in-house on a single site in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Island RIBs are known for their excellent sea-keeping, predictable handling, soft ride and high standard of finish.  The company build boats for several well-known organisations including the British Antarctic Survey, Williams Shipping and Sea Start as well as private customers.
