Summary

  • I am responsible for the English Heritage historic sites along Hadrian’s Wall which include: Birdoswald Birdoswald Roman Fort, Chesters and Housesteads Roman Forts Chesters Roman Fort and Museum, Corbridge Roman Town Corbridge Roman Town and Lanercost Priory.
  • A big part of my role is forecasting and keeping track of income and KPI figures, driving the teams to hit and exceed their targets for the charity.
  • Health and Safety is another crucial aspect of my role, ensuring that our sites are safe, teams are well briefed, and visitors are safe. Most of our sites are incredibly old, with lots of loose masonry and uneven surfaces that we monitor and ensure as low risk as possible.

My role links in very heavily with geography and science. Looking at it from the physical aspect all my historic properties are situated in key geographical locations which the Romans chose from a defensive perspective. All my historic properties command views of the surrounding areas and were strategically placed in their locations by the Romans and those of the past for their proximity to key landmarks and natural features such as cliffs, rivers, hills, and other physical features.

Fast forward to the modern day my role now must consider the environmental impact the current climate affects all our historic sites along Hadrian’s Wall. The landscape is naturally changing and along with other colleagues we must come up with ways of deciding how we protect the future of these monuments. There is also the element that we must look after the exposed ruins, dug up by the Victorians verses modern scientific and archaeological interpretation of how we approach this.
