Ray, former student of Ormiston Denes Academy, works as a Programme Coordinator for Ormiston Trust, and is a final year medical student at Imperial College London.

Ray studied his undergraduate degree at Imperial College London in Medical Sciences and Global Health. Ray is in the final year of his medicine degree and is working in public health research.

For the last eight years Ray has worked in voluntary sector project funding development across Norfolk and Suffolk. He is currently working for Ormiston Trust as their programme coordinator and youth engagement lead which includes supporting the development of the #WeWill programme which will be delivered in OAT academies in the next two years.

Ray is the first to say that there was no ‘lightbulb’ moment of revelation where he realised that he wanted to be a doctor. Growing up in a family of doctors and engineers certainly influenced him, but it was by no means the biggest factor behind his choice. The most important thing is to have an active interest in your chosen field; he has always enjoyed Science and Humanities, which combines well in medicine.

With regards to his role at Ormiston Trust, Ray came into the field of project development and funding totally by chance. When he was Head Boy at Ormiston Denes Academy, he was told about the opportunity to bid for funding from Ormiston Trust for a student-led project. He wrote a funding application for £2500 on the last day of term, having never written a funding application before and was successful in his application! This gave him a taste of project development and funding development, and he went on to design a successful community project.

Ray’s advice to other OAT students:

  • Be ready to seize the opportunity! Often it is a case of giving it a go and seeing what happens, see who you meet along the way and you never know what will happen!
